Choosing My New Helmet
In need of a new helmet, and to be honest, quite fond of a walk through the eclectic isles of decathlon I set out in search for my latest reasonably priced piece of cycling gear.
I had already done some prior research and had an idea of what I wanted in mind. Things such as price, weight, air flow, build quality, and of course safety being the main purpose of a helmet, were all carefully considered. I must confess I did also spend, perhaps an unusual amount of time, trying to look casual as I took in the helmets atop my reasonably sized head (yes, I am a size large) from every conceivable angle in the mirror. After the final helmet and angle had been assessed I settled on the Van Rysel Roadr 500 MIPS as my latest lid..
Feeling sturdy in my hand, and more importantly like a good fit on my head I left with the reasonably priced bike helmet that includes enhanced safety features.
Ride and Review
Build Quality

Clasps, buckles and adjusters feel secure, staying just where you left them, meaning no need to continually be fiddling with a loose chin strap. When it comes to padding there is just a singular piece attached to the top of the helmet. While I was initially sceptical at the lack of the customary front padding, it did not feel uncomfortable or unsecure during my posing or ride testing.
The helmet’s tough polycarbonate outer shell feels more robust than others in this price range. However after my previous experience with matte finished helmets, I did not expect much in the way of longevity when it came to its sleek look. But, the helmet seems to be standing up to rough handling well, taking being shoved in and out of a bag, locker or wobbling along the floor under my office desk in its stride.
Safety Features
The helmet includes MIPS (Multi-directional impact system), now a more common feature in mid-range helmets. MIPS adds a low-friction layer inside the helmet, allowing slight movement between your head and the helmet during angled impacts, helping to reduce rotational forces that are linked to brain injuries.
On the rear of the helmet you are able to mount a rear light through use of the Vioo Clip attachment, a great addition that could help make you more visible to other road users.
The EPS in mould process provides a bound between the protective inner and the polycarbonate outer for enhanced strength, over glued helmet construction of the past.
Weight and Airflow
With my size large weighing in at 365g, this helmet isn’t going to win you any points with a carbon fibre loving crowd. However, for a commuter crown this falls exactly where you would expect it to be.

With 16 rather sizable holes surrounding your head the helmet does a good job keeping you cool. Potentially too cool in the winter months, but nothing a microfiber balaclava, buff, or cap wouldn’t solve.
Look
Looks wise the simple design and limited colours keep this helmet looking sleek and minimal. I don’t think this helmet would look out of place, on road, cycle paths or some light offroad/gravel trails.
Final thoughts
If you are looking for a sturdy unisex commuter cycling helmet with a good level of adjustability and some extra safety features this helmet would be a good fit. The abundance of air flow is great for warmer days or longer weekend rides.
